Typed transcripts of letters to his wife tell of the regiment's activities in battle and skirmishes with very personal descriptions. Fought at Gettysburg, with his regiment remaining in Maryland and Virginia, including the Shenandoah Valley. Gives his wife instructions on the home business including feeding the livestock and the planting. Tells what they eat, describes the wounds of some and the names of those he knows who were killed. Describes the incident with the captain taking his horse with much anger.

Soldier from Lebanon, Russell County, Virginia who served with the 16th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. After burning Chambersburg, Penn. his regiment stopped to rest near Moorefield, Maryland. Reynolds had left his horse saddled, fearing reprisal from the Union soldiers. When this occurred, his commanding officer Captain Fickle took Reynolds' horse forcing him to flee on foot, running through freezing streams and becoming exhausted.
